Chapter Fifteen

Someone jumped on the stage and announced it was five minutes to midnight. Cooper looped an arm around Jayson's neck and pulled him closer. Their eyes locked and the revelers and celebratory sounds around them all faded to a blurred white haze.

Cooper stepped closer, almost chest-to-chest and sharing the same breath. Cooper leaned forward and rubbed his nose alongside Jayson's. His hand gripped Jayson's jawline and his heart began to pound a little harder in his chest.

Jayson closed the remaining space between them and licked at Cooper's lips. Cooper opened for Jayson and the kiss swept them away, far above the din of the party. Jayson pushed his tongue deeper and Cooper moaned. It was the bravest and most liberating thing he'd ever done; to be standing in the middle of a dance floor in a room full of people while kissing a man. A shiver shot through Jayson and Cooper's arms wrapped around him, almost as if Cooper knew Jayson needed to feel grounded in the moment.

“Soon as the countdown to the New Year is over, we're out of here,” Cooper said.

Jayson nipped at Cooper's bottom lip and sucked the plump flesh into his mouth. “It's not soon enough for me.”

Cooper groaned and squeezed the back of Jayson's thick neck. “I can't wait to get you in my bed.”

“Then what?” Jayson asked. His tongue swirled between Cooper's lips and dipped inside.

“I fuck you into my mattress until we can't walk,” Cooper said.

“That could take days,” Jayson said.

“Or weeks,” Cooper added and winked.

Jayson smiled and went in for another kiss. Behind them the chanting began, raising the noise level.

“Ten… nine… eight… seven…”

Jayson's hand slipped up into the waves on Cooper's head, making the connection between their mouths tighter – almost airtight, and it still didn't feel close enough. He needed more. He wanted to slide inside Cooper's mouth and devour him.

“Six… five… four…”

Cooper was starting to feel light-headed. The rush he got from Jayson was like nothing else. It topped the feeling he got from any drug he'd consumed and it was far better than anyone from his past. He didn't think it was possible for anything to feel better than this kiss with this man.

“Three… two… one!!!”

“Happy New Year,” Jayson said. He barely pulled back enough to say it before Cooper took another kiss.

“First of many with you – I hope,” Cooper said.

Cooper's words hung between them. Jayson couldn't mask the surprise on his face. It was the closest either of them had come to an outright admission to where they were going. Was it the heat of the moment? Jayson didn't think so. This felt real, honest, and Jayson was left standing there holding his breath; trying to figure out what he should say – if anything. Jayson opened his mouth to speak and Cooper was pulled away from him and into the embrace of Wheland.

“Happy New Year, brother,” Wheland said. He hugged Cooper, lifting him off the floor in the process.

It wasn't the hug that sent warning flares soaring inside Jayson's head, or the intensity that came along with it.
